Abstract

This article provides a short historical overview of German immigration and education in Australia and New Zealand and compares the two countries’ current language education developments and their impacts on the teaching and learning of German in secondary and higher education. It especially examines the last decade, focusing on enrolment trends, strategies to support student retention, and the impact of national language policies. Using two exemplar cases from the University of Sydney and Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland, the article discusses current curriculum initiatives and evaluates one of them, a blended-learning beginner course, through learning analytics of student achievement.
